ÅRET x DGI BYEN

The material from Året / The Year-series of books always wanted to be more than pictures in a book, and it was an honour to be allowed to share them with even more of Copenhagen's citizens. DGI Byen is a place bustling with local families, groups of friends and coworkers - basically your average urban citizen, who you will not always reach in the galleries and museums. With the variety of images and photographers in Året / The Year in mind, we put together an exhibition that shares Copenhagen's diversity and contrasts beyond the course of the year 2018, which is originally presented in the books. Participating were 31 photographers (one for each day in the month of January, where the exhibition launched) with a total of 64 works.

We used the color palettes of the seasons to divide the pictures in four separate groups. The works were placed on the walls in undulating movements, not only as a nod to DGI Byens swimming pool, which it is so well known for, but also as a symbol of the ups and downs that the course of the year often offers. The original idea for this design of the exhibition came from the famous mosaics that to this day adorn many a building in the former USSR thus forming a part of the Soviet cultural heritage - the idea was not so much propaganda or politics, but rather to create a vivid, colourful space, where you could dive into an individual photo or just enjoy the totality from a far.

The exhibition was shown at the round foyer of DGI Byen from January to July 2020.
